Delta Chi (ΔΧ) is an international Geek letter collegiate social fraternity formed on October 13, 1890, at Cornell University. DX first began as a professional fraternity for law students. Eventually, Delta Chi became a general membership social fraternity. Delta Chi soon became the first international fraternities to abolish the hazing practices often associated with other Greek letter organizations. Delta Chi is a charter member of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC). Delta Chi has initiated over 116,000 members across 99 Chapters and 14 Colonies, with 34 Alumni Chapters.

Chapter History

The genesis of Delta Chi at William and Mary came from a group of 19 young men, the majority of whom had formed a tight bond from their freshman year hall in 2001.  Some had rushed other fraternities, but ultimately, they didn't want to break up the group.  Someone eventually asked the question, "why don't we just start our own fraternity?"  In the words of James Goodwin, the chapter’s second President, “From my perspective, our primary ambition was to somehow memorialize this bond we had forged and turn it into something that we could pass down to future generations of students.”

The group contacted several national fraternities that were not yet colonized on campus. From the beginning, it seemed that Delta Chi was the best fit. Not only did their values align with the founding group’s, the National Fraternity also expressed mutual interest and was very active in their communications. The National Fraternity was very eager to get a chapter at the birthplace of Greek life.  Delta Chi sent leadership consultants to conduct a recruitment drive for additional founders. Colonization occurred September 28, 2002, and the chapter was officially chartered in 2005.

There was much initial controversy surrounding WM DX’s founding presence. Things were not done the "right" way - Delta Chi hadn't been formally invited by CFA; the chapter just showed up.  Additionally, at the time, another fraternity was being relaunched. So, there was a certain perception surrounding our new fraternity stealing an older organization’s thunder.  Dealing with that adversity brought the founders all closer together, made the foundation of our chapter that much stronger, and has served as an example to every brother since that everyone can carve their own, non-traditional path to success.

This pressure also encouraged the founders to be vocal about their core values and intentions. The enshrined founding principles are:

  • Brotherhood - “Brothers support and encourage each other to grow as individuals, and also hold each other accountable.”

  • Service - “To the college community and to our communities at large, never forgetting that those in a position of privilege have an obligation to help those in less fortunate circumstances.”

  • Leadership - “Lead with love, lead humbly, lead by example; use your platform to lift others up rather than to push others down.”
